Bandits have abducted a 90-year-old village head, Mallam Abubakar Lafiya, from his residence in Ka’ada, Dekara District of Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The attackers reportedly stormed Lafiya’s home at about 6pm on Saturday and whisked him away after firing several shots, causing panic among residents.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the elderly traditional leader is the biological father of the current District Head of Dekara.
The resident described the incident as distressing, particularly because of Lafiya’s advanced age.
“The abduction has caused concern among us in Ka’ada, Dekara and surrounding communities, particularly because of the victim’s advanced age. The village head is 90 years old now,” the resident said.
Residents have expressed concern over the safety of the elderly community leader and appealed to security agencies to urgently intensify efforts to secure his release.
The incident has also heightened fears among residents of Ka’ada, Dekara and neighbouring communities, who are calling for stronger security measures to prevent further attacks.
Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Niger State Police Command were unsuccessful as the telephone number of the command’s spokesperson could not be reached as of press time.
