More veterans of Nigerian football have continued to endorse ex-Super Eagles attacker, Benedict Akwuegbu, to occupy the driver’s seat in the next board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Former league star, Sunday Okulaja and ex-Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje, in separate interviews, Monday, said that they were impressed with the track record of the former Grazer AK of Austria Bomber.
Okulaja, who was a prolific scorer for Udoji United, First Bank, and Julius Berger before plying his trade in other parts of the world, said Akwuegbu possesses an awesome playing and administrative record.
“Akwuegbu was at his best at the World Cup, Nations Cup, and UEFA football leagues. He had seen it all before retiring to set up various clubs and academies. He is a B.Sc degree holder who is seeking further life saving knowledge in London.
His deep exposure and broad relationship with past and present players would drastically fast-track the development of our football if elected as NFF President.
“He is credible and tested, and we now have the chance of correcting the wrongs of the past. Missing two World Cup finals consecutively confirms the terrible state of our football. The time for change is now”, declared the ibadan-based Okulaja, now a business mogul.
Also, Sam Sodje, who played for English side Brentford, and currently an official of the Delta Sports Commission, said he was highly elated over the endorsement of Akwuegbu by key stakeholders like Yahaya Kwande, Barr. Ifeanyi Dike, Emmanuel Amuneke, Kanu Nwankwo, Sam Pam Jnr, Sambo Choji, Bitrus Bewarang, Finidi George, Ben Duamlong, and several others so far.
Sodje said, “Akwuegbu is a credible ex-footballer, now into top football management. He is among players who have effectively combined football with education. He and some of us have proved that we are fully educated and can take our football to the right level.
“My appeal is for all stakeholders to support the best to rescue our football. Everyone must be in the forefront of raising quality players from the grassroots to international level.
“Akwuegbu is smart and fully educated besides the experience he garnered over the years in various football leagues across the globe. Era of poor players’ education is long over.”
