President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has described the late former Green Eagles captain, Christian Chukwu, as a national icon whose legacy will endure for generations.

Gusau made the statement on Friday during a condolence visit to the Chukwu family in Enugu. Represented by the NFF 1st Vice President, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu, the NFF President paid glowing tribute to the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning captain, praising his selfless service to Nigerian football.

“The late Chukwu gave his all for the country. He served Nigeria with all his heart and is a hero even in death. One thing is clear: Chukwu can never be forgotten given how well he served the country and his achievements both as a player and as a coach,” Gusau said. He emphasized that the purpose of the visit was not only to offer condolences but also to align with the family on preparations for the football legend’s final rites. “Chukwu is a hero, and the NFF will participate fully in his burial. We want to be on the same page with the family regarding the arrangements,” he stated.

In response, Chukwu’s son, Emeka, expressed gratitude to the NFF for their solidarity, assuring that the family would soon release the programme for the final burial rites.

The NFF delegation included Member of the NFF Executive Committee and Chairman of the Nigeria National League, Mr. George Aluo; Chairman of the Enugu State Football Association, Barr. Tony Ugwu; Imo State FA Chairman, Barr. Ifeanyi Dike; and Anambra State FA Chairman, Mr. Chikelue Iloenyosi.
