More stakeholders, including ex-Nigerian international, Sambo Choji, and former Secretary of defunct Gabros International Football Club of Nnewi, Barrister Iyke Igbokwe, have thrown their weight behind former Super Eagles’ striker, Benedict Akwuegbu, as next President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Sambo Choji said he has known Akwuegbu since their career at Mighty Jets, JIB Rocks, Plateau United, in Germany, and other parts of the world, declaring that the former Super Eagles’ forward, popularly known as Austrian Bomber has what it takes to steer Nigerian football back to the glory days.
“Sentiments aside, Benedict Akwuegbu is the most qualified to be NFF president. He has played football at the highest level. He started from the cadet and graduated to the Flying Eagles up to the Super Eagles where he featured at the AFCON 2000 and Korea Japan 2002 FIFA World Cup. He is passionate about the game and has a track record of funding three football clubs. Akwuegbu knows what to do to reposition Nigerian football. He is also well educated besides his success on and off the pitch,” Sambo Choji said.
Corroborating Sambo, Barrister Iyke Igbokwe appealed to ex-footballers and other stakeholders to queue behind Akwuegbu whom he said has a B.Sc degree and is currently pursuing a Nursing programme in London.
Barr Igbokwe, who hailed the recent resignation of the last NFF board, said that footballers and genuine stakeholders should embrace Akwuegbu, whom he said has the pedigree to make Nigeria football blossom again.
“We have seen enough politicians and others masquerading as club chairmen. The time to have a full fledged ex-international footballer investing in football, helping past and present footballers, and other true stakeholders has come. “Akwuegbu has been a successful player and currently funds Akwuegbu United, FC Mbaise and academies besides his club managerial stints at Plateau United and Heartland FC. Apart from being a genuine club owner after playing at the highest level, he is young, dynamic, and humble. The cap fits him most”, Igbokwe concluded.
