The Eze Ndigbo Ifako Ijaiye. Lagos, Eze Michael Ezekwobi (Oyiomanatumba Nɗigbo Gbaagburugburu) has clarified the insinuations in some quarters that celebration of New Yam festival is worship of Idol.

In a chart with the media, Ezekwobi said celebration of New Yam festival is based on Igbo tradition and culture that is rooted in truth and honesty.

” Yam, kolanut and white chalk(Nzu) used during the festival are created by God. That’s why during the festival, praises and honour are rendered to God for good harvest and for Him to bless the next farming season.

“This simple celebration of culture should not be confused with idol worshipers who carry out divination and rituals that are dedicated to deities. It is a situation like this that people often misunderstood for the new yam festival. ”

Drawing support from the Holy scripture, The Royal Father said people like Noah, Lot, and Abraham at one time or the other celebrated festivals that glorified God.

In a message to Ndigbo in Ifako Ijaiye. Ezekwobi commend them for their steadfastness in promoting Igbo culture in the Diaspora, adding that measures like this would help keep Igbo culture alive in the heart of our children born outside Igbo land.
