New Uniben VC, Edoba assumes office, to prioritise students, staff welfare

The newly sworn-in Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (Uniben), Prof. Omoregie Edoba, yesterday, said the students needs and that of the staff of the institution will remain his topmost priorities as he assumes office.

He made the pledges while delivering his acceptance speech shortly after he was sworn in as the 11th Vice Chancellor of the institution.

Prof. Edoba who listed his missions and visions for the institution to be sustaining and improving the degree programmes of the University with special attention being paid to national and emerging global standards, position the University as a capacity-building training hub across various vocations
and disciplines, with concomitant improvement in its revenue base, and to attract global attention as a leading capacity-building training institution, said students and staff welfare through income, and support received from various sources will play a major role in achieving that.

Edoba also said he will significantly improve on the infrastructure and environment of the University in the
areas of electricity access using renewable energy sources; fast and functional internet service, provides conducive hostel facilities,and environment friendly initiatives,
among others just as he guarantees harmonious relationship between the University management, staff and student unions.

He said as Chief Executive, his focus is to take the University to higher grounds in consonance with the laws applicable to the University, and without undermining the institutional framework of the University system adding that to this end, the committee system and other institutional operational mechanisms of the University shall be maintained and advanced.

He said in the last decades, the University of Benin, like other federal and state tertiary institutions, has benefitted from the support and intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund
(TETFUND)

He commend the federal government for its efforts in this regard and appealed to
the TETFUND to continue with the laudable support that has helped to save the system from total infrastructural collapse and dearth in funding support for research and
development.

He commended his predecessor, Prof. Lilian Salami for her giant strides and for laying a solid foundation in the university for him to build on.

He also lauded the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II for his fatherly role towards him.
