NESREA shuts down Sunseed Oil for excessive air emissions

From Idu Jude, Abuja

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed the Sunseed Oil facility in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The enforcement exercise followed reports of persistent air pollution caused by excessive air emissions from the facility, which was found to be in flagrant violation of the National Environmental (Air Quality Control) Regulations. The regulations provide for the installation of pollution-abatement equipment and the adoption of cleaner production practices.

The severity of the emissions, which posed an immediate threat to the surrounding ecosystem and the health of nearby residents, led to the immediate closure of the facility.

The enforcement action is in line with NESREA’s commitment to ensuring industrial compliance and protecting the public from the hazardous effects of unregulated industrial discharges, including air pollutants and effluents.

The Director-General of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, warned industrial operators to ensure full compliance with national environmental regulations and to avoid actions that negatively impact the health of citizens and the environment.
