The National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), North Central Zonal office Jos and the Benue State Government has flagged of the distribution of relief materials to the victims of flood disaster and herders/farmers clashes in the state.
The flag off distribution exercise took place on Friday, at North Bank, Baka IDP camp in Makurdi Local Government Area of the state.
Addressing the IDPs on behalf of the Federal Government, the Director General of NEMA, through the North Central Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr. Eugene Nyelong said the items were approved by the DG after the joint assessment carried out by NEMA, North Central Zonal Office and Benue State Emergency Management Agency, (BSEMA).
He commended the unflinching support of the Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume who made sure that the items got the approval and officially released in order to assist the IDPs and further cushion the effect of the disasters they have suffered in the cause of their stay in camps and those affected by flood.
Expressing his great delight and deep sense of humility to sustain NEMA’s support to Persons of Concern in Benue, the NEMA DG, thanked Governor Alia for complementing the Federal Government’s effort for providing huge palliatives to Benue people, describing his Government as being sensitive to the plight of his people, even as he lauded BSEMA boss for his pro-activeness in handling the issue of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) with sincerity and purposefulness.
Speaking, the Acting Executive Secretary, Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Sir. James Iorpuu who received the relief assistance on behalf of Benue State Government, appreciated the Federal Government through NEMA and saying that the relief items will go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of the IDPs and flood victims.
Iorpuu, who was represented by the Head of Administration and Supply, Mr. Donald Komgbenda, urged the displaced people to keep hope with Governor Alia’s administration, describing the Governor as focused, committed and consistent in his promise to restore their peace as well as return them back to their ancestral communities across the state.
He assured the IDPs and 2023 flood victims of a transparent distribution of the relief assistance.
Items donated by NEMA include 1,500 bags of 10kg rice, 500 bags of garri, 1,500 bags of 10kg beans, 200 kegs of vegetable and palm oil each, 90 cartons of tin tomatoes (sachet) and 40 cartons of seasoning cubes.
The Information Officer, Benue SEMA, Charity Agber said NEMA also donated non food items including mattresses, blankets, detergents, zinc nails, women and men’s wears, and children wears amongst others.
