The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for school-based candidates, coming exactly 63 days after the last paper.
Announcing the results at the council headquarters in Minna, the Niger State capital, on Thursday, the Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, said a total of 1,378,048 candidates registered for the examination.
The Registrar said this number is made up of 682,352 males and 695,696 females.
However, the number of candidates that eventually sat for the examination, according to the Registrar, was 1,371,992, representing 678,903 males and 693,089 females.
Professor Wushishi explained that of this number, 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent, obtained five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics,
Equally, 1,162,118 candidates, representing 84.70 per cent, also obtained five credits and above irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.
Also, a total of 1,334 candidates with special needs sat for the examination.
The Registrar, who reiterated the council’s zero tolerance for examination malpractice, noted that appropriate standards and excellence were maintained right from the planning stage to the release of results.
To this end, Professor Wushishi disclosed that 1,406 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice in the course of the 2026 examination, as against 3,878 candidates in 2025, which shows a decrease of 64.74 per cent.
He noted that the reduction in the level of malpractice was as a result of deepened monitoring of the examination by members of the Governing Board, management and senior staff of the council.
He commended the staff for their professionalism, discipline and relentless pursuit of excellence, stressing that “your intellectual rigour, meticulous attention to quality and commitment to ethical standards have ensured that we deliver results that are credible and trusted by the students, institutions and the public.
“The success of this exercise is not accidental; it is as a result of consistent commitment across directorates and departments.”
The Registrar used the occasion to thank President Bola Tinubu for reappointing him for a second term in office and for his continued belief in the organisation.
He also thanked various stakeholders for making this year’s examination a huge success.
The highlight of the release of the results was the presentation of medals to sportsmen and women who represented the organisation in various sports competitions in 2026.
