Ndidi: Why I celebrated my AFCON goal like Kanu

NDIDI

It was all smiles for Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi after finding the net for the first time in 10 years and the celebration says it all.

Ndidi at the Mixed Zone in Fez explained why he celebrated his goal like how Kanu Nwankwo did at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta after Nigeria’s hard-fought 3–2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday in Fez.

Ndidi who gave Nigeria a two-goal cushion in the second half, heading home a corner off an assist from Ademola Lookman, paid tribute to African football legend Nwankwo Kanu by recreating Kanu’s iconic celebration from the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

The celebration referenced Kanu’s famous dance following Nigeria’s memorable comeback victory over Brazil in the Olympic semifinals.

Ndidi said why giving reasons behind the celebration.

“I just remember my dad, my dad always talks about Kanu and all. So I said I kind of like the video and then I said, “I will do that one for my dad.”

On his goal at the 2025 AFCON, “It was really special, after a decade scoring my first goal is really amazing and we got the win which is more important.”
