Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has been thrown into mourning following the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who passed away on Tuesday after a tragic road accident in Delta State.

According to reports, the late Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, was involved in a fatal traffic accident in Umunede and was rushed to a hospital in Agbor, where he was later confirmed dead.

Ndidi’s club side, Besiktas, has since confirmed the sad development in an official statement released on Tuesday.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident. May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones,” the Turkish club stated via its official X account.

The loss comes just weeks after Ndidi captained Nigeria to a third-place finish at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The midfielder has often spoke fondly of his father’s influence on his football journey.

It will be recalled that Ndidi dedicated his first international goal for Nigeria to his father during the Super Eagles’ group-stage victory over Tunisia at the AFCON in Fes. Explaining his celebration, Ndidi revealed that it was inspired by his father’s admiration for Nigerian football legend Kanu Nwankwo.

“The celebration came from my dad because he was always talking about Kanu Nwankwo. So I just thought about my dad. I had seen the video before, but it came to my head, and I said I was going to do it for my dad,” Ndidi told reporters at the time.

Condolences have continued to pour in for the Super Eagles skipper from fans, teammates, and members of the football community.
