Navy presents SUVs to 12 senior rates

Nigerian Navy, at the weekend, presented 12  Toyota Hilux  Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) to 12 senior rates of the force that have served the force meritoriously.

The senior rates, according to Chief of Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ogalla, are what is being referred to by the force as Admiral of the Lower Deck as they have reached the height of their career in the service.

The senior rates were of the rank of Master Warrant Officer (MWO) in the Nigerian Navy and the position of MWO is a senior non-commissioned officer (NCO) rank, typically held by experienced and highly skilled individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, technical proficiency, and dedication throughout their careers.

The presentation of key to the 12 MWOs was the highpoint of the Nigerian Navy 68th anniversary celebrations which started on May 20, 2024 and came to an end with a ceremonial sunset on June 1.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu who was represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, pleaded with the force over the attacks by the people, urging them to endure as Nigerians love what they are doing.  

Sanwo-Olu urged the Navy to intensify efforts against waterways threats, protecting maritime resources and ensuring safety and security in maritime activities.

He advocated a holistic approach that encompassed economic growth, environmental stewardship and security in tackling terrorism and insurgency.

The governor acknowledged the significant strides of the Nigerian Navy in safeguarding the nation’s waters, protecting maritime resources and ensuring the safety and security of maritime activities, noting that the force’s dedication and bravery had been pivotal in combating piracy, smuggling and other maritime threats, thereby, contributing to the peace and stability of the region.

Also present was the Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Marawalle.

Many other dignitaries graced the occasion hosted by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ogalla. The dignitaries included the Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Air Staff, Hasan Abubakar, and the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Emmanuel Undiandeye.

Also in attendance were former chief of defence staff, O.S. Ibrahim, many former service chiefs and icons of the Navy, general/flag/air officers commanding and members of the diplomatic corps.

The evening also witnessed a helicopter display by the Naval Air Base, repelling from static helos by the special boat service, winging of qualified pilots and award of command at sea badges to deserving seaman officers.

Ogalla thanked everyone for their support and stated that with the multinational nature of the attendees for celebrations, Nigeria’s place in the comity of littoral states had been further strengthened.
