The Nigerian Navy said its Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny has discovered and destroyed an illegal refining site in Ataba general area, Rivers State.

According to the Navy, the operation took place on Saturday, August 17.

Two cooking pots, several storage tanks and dug-out pits laden with an unspecified amount of stolen crude oil were discovered at the site.

Similarly, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Soroh discovered a building in Kassama Community, Southern Ijaw LGA, Bayelsa State where several sacks of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), better known as diesel, were hidden.

The Navy said the discovery was made on Thursday, August 15.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, launched Operation Delta Sanity in January 2024 to combat oil theft in the Niger Delta.

In July, the operation was extended by 90 days.
