Nationwide roads tour: NANS commences North-East phase

…inspects Jamare-Azare, Potiskum-Maiduguri roads

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commenced the North-East phase of its nationwide Federal Roads Project Tour with inspection of the Jamare-Azare and Potiskum-Maiduguri roads in Bauchi State.

NANS President, Comrade Babatunde Akinteye, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.

Akinteye said he led a high-powered delegation comprising NANS, the National Association of University Students (NAUS), the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) and the National Association of Colleges of Education Students (NANCES) on the inspection.

According to him, the roads link three major institutions – Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State University and Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare – and are of strategic importance to students who commute daily to their campuses.

“We assessed the quality of the roads and their impact on the movement of students within the axis. I am pleased to state that the projects inspected are completed and meet commendable quality standards,” he said.

The statement further reads, “As major users of these roads and partners in nation-building, we commend the Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, CON, for his foresight and commitment to infrastructural development that serves Nigerian students and commuters across these states.

“We also commend the decisiveness of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his investments in infrastructural development. For us as students, the quality and accessibility of roads leading to our institutions remain a matter of direct concern, as we commute daily along these routes to our various campuses.

“As we continue the tour across other parts of the North-East, we will continue to give our unbiased commendations where projects meet the required standards and make recommendations where there are identified gaps.

“As major users of the nation’s road infrastructure, the leadership of NANS, alongside our sister student bodies, will continue to assess federal road projects leading to tertiary institutions, examine their impact on students’ daily movement, and draw attention to areas requiring improvement.

“The Nationwide Federal Roads Project Tour will continue across other parts of the country, after which an official report and recommendations will be presented.

“As the voice of Nigerian students, we remain committed to advocating for projects and policies that improve students’ welfare and create a more conducive environment for learning.”
