Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Portugal national team camp following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, saying he will later reveal the reasons behind his decision.
The veteran forward announced his departure in a social media post after Portugal manager Jorge Jesus held a press conference.
Ronaldo said his decision followed both the coach’s press conference and a conversation with the federation president.
“After the National Team Coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I made the decision to leave the National Team camp,” Ronaldo said.
The Portugal captain, however, indicated that he would disclose more details about his decision at a later date.
“In due time, I will tell the truth to all Portuguese people about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself,” he said.
Ronaldo also wished Portugal and his teammates well despite his decision to leave the camp.
“Now is the time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates, without exception.”
His departure comes amid recent attention surrounding his relationship with Jesus and his role in the Portugal squad.
Jesus had earlier sought to play down reports of tension between himself and Ronaldo, saying the Portuguese media had pushed him to speak with the captain about what he described as a situation that was not actually a problem.
Ronaldo’s latest statement does not provide specific details about what prompted his departure, leaving the full reasons for his decision to be clarified later.
