The Nigerian National Single Window (NSW) project is steadily gaining momentum, with renewed commitments from key government agencies to meet its operational target in early 2026. Launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in April 2024, the initiative is designed to simplify trade procedures, enhance transparency, reduce clearance times, and deliver broad economic benefits.

High-level review meetings held at the Nigeria Customs headquarters in Abuja have accentuated the government’s determination to fast-track the project.

On August 12, 2025, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji and Director of the National Single Window, Tola Fakolade, pledged closer inter-agency coordination. Discussions focused on aligning integration timelines and ensuring that all participating agencies are fully prepared for the NSW’s official rollout in the first quarter of 2026.

In a follow-up session at Customs headquarters on September 16, Adedeji expressed satisfaction with the progress made. “I can’t thank you all enough for the wonderful progress as I’m seeing everything being completed. This has become the official headquarters of the implementation. Nigeria Customs Service is playing host to the core implementation scheme of Single Window,” he said, highlighting the strong collaboration driving the initiative.

Fakolade, during his briefing, outlined plans for nationwide stakeholder engagement sessions across Nigeria’s four geopolitical zones in October 2025. He also confirmed that bi-weekly technical meetings will continue to address operational challenges and streamline integration processes.

“As part of the implementation of the Single Window Project, there has been approval for the release of funds to support different MDAs, especially in IT infrastructure,” Fakolade stated. “We’d like to also gain approval to visit the various commands to figure out if there’s any support they might need so as to make this a reality.”

The Comptroller-General, Adeniyi, reiterated Customs’ full commitment to the project, emphasizing the Service’s dual role: not only fulfilling technical responsibilities but also driving the broader vision of a seamless trade ecosystem. “We are going to deliver on this mandate. At the rate that we are currently striking agreements on so many of these issues, I want to believe we would be right on target,” he said. “I would like to reiterate our support for the build-up towards the implementation of the National Single Window.”

Once operational, the NSW is expected to significantly cut cargo clearance times, reduce trade costs, curb revenue leakages, and elevate Nigeria’s competitiveness in global trade.

By consolidating multiple government services onto a single digital platform, businesses can expect more efficient processes, reduced bureaucracy, and greater predictability in import and export operations.

With bolstered agency partnerships, dedicated funding for IT infrastructure and a clear roadmap for stakeholder engagement, the National Single Window project, according to stakeholders, will transform Nigeria’s trade landscape and deliver a lasting economic impact.
