The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for the submission of memoranda and position papers on the proposed legislation to Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. WAT.
Chairman of the Working Group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, announced the extension in a statement on Thursday, saying it was aimed at giving stakeholders more time to prepare and submit well-considered contributions to the proposed legislation.
The extension is expected to broaden participation in the ongoing process, with legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security sector professionals, state governments, professional bodies, academics, experts and members of the public urged to take advantage of the additional time.
According to the Working Group, the proposed National Policing Bill is designed to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework required for an effective policing architecture capable of responding to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
It said the legislation would also provide safeguards for accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The Working Group identified sustainable funding, command and control structures, recruitment and training standards, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency coordination, accountability mechanisms and safeguards against political interference or abuse as some of the critical issues requiring stakeholder input.
It stressed that broad consultation was essential to producing a policing framework that is effective, accountable, sustainable and responsive to the security needs of communities across the country.
“All submissions must be made on or before 5:00 p.m. WAT on Friday, August 21, 2026, exclusively through the official National Policing Bill portal, nationalpolicingbill.com,” the statement said.
The Working Group said it would, at the conclusion of its assignment, present a final, implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill for onward legislative processing.
It also expressed appreciation to stakeholders who had already submitted memoranda and encouraged those yet to participate to use the extended deadline to contribute to the national policing reform process.
