- Warns against intimidation, extortion
Chief Joseph Onu Enemona, Agent Chairman of the National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria (NASWDEN), has commended scrap and waste dealers across the country for disregarding a strike notice issued by a group he described as impostors and continuing with their legitimate businesses.
Enemona said the decision of members not to heed the strike call demonstrated their confidence in the leadership of NASWDEN under its National President, Pastor Luke Uchechukwu Ogbu.
He also felicitated with members of the association across the country on the occasion of the new month of October 2026, thanking them for what he described as their trust and confidence in the leadership.
The Agent Chairman equally commended Ogbu for what he termed his tenacious leadership and timely intervention in checking the activities of those allegedly attempting to force scrap dealers to embark on a strike.
He urged members to continue with their legitimate businesses without fear of intimidation, alleging that some persons were attempting to take the law into their own hands by forcefully imposing a strike on dealers.
Enemona warned those he described as impostors, extortionists and individuals masquerading under the aegis of NASWDEN to desist from attempting to enforce the strike.
According to him, anyone caught intimidating or compelling members to participate in the strike could face arrest and prosecution by relevant security agencies.
He maintained that the dissemination of what he called fictitious information about a strike was inimical to the progress of the association and unacceptable, particularly in view of the prevailing economic situation in the country.
Enemona urged members to remain resolute, defend their rights and refuse to succumb to intimidation, harassment or extortion.
He also assured them that security agencies were prepared to intervene where necessary to protect legitimate operators in the scrap business.
The Agent Chairman said individuals seeking to exploit the current situation failed to appreciate the dynamics of the scrap business, particularly the role of demand and supply in determining the prices of scrap metals.
He consequently urged members to continue to disregard any unauthorised strike notice and go about their legitimate businesses, assuring them that the NASWDEN leadership under Ogbu was working to check the activities of persons he accused of attempting to destabilise the association.
