Nashville International Airport in Tennessee, United States, is set to be renamed in honour of late country music icon Dolly Parton.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) approved the move in a unanimous 6-0 vote on Friday, backing plans to incorporate Parton’s name and legacy into the airport’s identity.
The authority said discussions were ongoing with relevant stakeholders to determine the appropriate name and how best to recognise the singer’s contribution to Nashville and the wider music industry.
“While a final name has not yet been determined, we are working closely with the appropriate parties to thoughtfully determine how Dolly Parton’s name and legacy will be incorporated,” the MNAA said in a statement.
Parton, one of the most celebrated figures in country music, died on August 25 at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer.
Her death marked the end of a career spanning decades, during which she became synonymous with Nashville, widely regarded as the home of country music.
The airport renaming plan is expected to provide a lasting tribute to the singer and songwriter, whose influence extended beyond music into film, philanthropy and business.
The MNAA has not yet announced the final name that will be adopted for the airport.
