Organised labour in Nasarawa State have thrown their weight behind the ongoing nationwide strike, joining the chorus of dissent echoing across the country.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state affirmed their full compliance with the directive from their national headquarters during an enforcement meeting held in Lafia on Monday.
NLC Chairman, Comr. Ismaila Okoh, expressed solidarity with the cause, emphasizing the urgency of the strike in response to perceived governmental indifference towards critical issues such as the new minimum wage and electricity tariff hikes.
“We had complied with the strike already, but we have to meet at the state level to formally inform our affiliates to be on the same page,” he stated.
A monitoring and enforcement team comprising 11 individuals was announced by the NLC Chairman to ensure comprehensive compliance across ministries, departments, and agencies. Workers were instructed to remain at home until further directives were issued by union leadership.
TUC Chairman, Comr. Mohammed Doma, noted sentiments of long-standing grievances, citing the economic hardships endured by workers since the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023.
“The salary of most civil servants cannot buy a bag of rice in the market, so what about other food items and ingredients,” he lamented,
Observations made by Daily Sun correspondent in Lafia revealed shuttered offices and stranded customers outside commercial banks. Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic Lafia, College of Agriculture, Science and Technology Lafia, and various government ministries remained deserted, as a result of the widespread participation in the strike.
