Nasarawa: Tight Race for SWAN Leadership as Sun Correspondent wins Secretary General Position

From Abel Leonard, Lafia

In a closely contested election for key leadership positions within the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), on Thursday, two candidates emerged victorious, while another contest remains unresolved.

The election, which was supervised by the National SWAN Representative and Secretary General, Comr. Ikenna Okonkwo, saw only the Chairmanship and Secretary roles actively contested, with other positions going unopposed.

A total of 26 voters were accredited by the SWAN Electoral Committee (SWANECO). “We are committed to ensuring a free and fair election process,” stated Isaac Ukpoju, the head of SWANECO. This commitment was evident in the meticulous supervision provided by the national body.

In the race for Secretary, Leonard Abel of Daily Sun emerged victorious, securing 19 votes against Michael A. Umudjon of Option FM, who garnered 7 votes. “I am grateful for the confidence shown in me by my colleagues,” said Abel, following his declaration as the winner. My victory was a decisive one, reflecting broad support towards me within the association.

The Chairmanship contest, however, concluded in a dramatic tie, with Smah George Josiah of NBS and Abari Solomon Dogara of NTA each receiving 13 votes. The unexpected deadlock has necessitated a re-run election. “Both candidates have shown commendable support, and we will ensure a fair re-run,” stated Okonkwo.

The SWAN Congress, in conjunction with SWANECO, has agreed to organize a re-run election for the Chairmanship position on a date yet to be fixed. “The details will be communicated soon,” confirmed Ukpoju, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution to ensure effective leadership.

In light of the upcoming re-run, members have been requested to contribute voluntarily to offset the associated costs. “We rely on the solidarity and support of our members to facilitate this process,” Isaac Ukpoju
