Only facts, conscience should protect mandates – PDP
From Abel Leonard, Lafia
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State has strongly criticized the recent statement made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) national Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in which he vowed to defend the mandate of Governor Sule after the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal nullified his election.
The PDP, in a statement on Monday signed by the PDP state Public Relations Officer Ibrahim Hamza and made available to newsmen expressed concerns that this stance could undermine democracy and the rule of law.
Ganduje’s statement was delivered by the APC Vice Chairman (North Central), Alhaji Muazu Rijau, during an event in Lafia over the weekend, which has drawn significant criticism from the PDP.
The PDP emphasized the importance of respecting the Election Tribunal’s verdict, as it is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democratic system.
“The tribunal had nullified Governor Sule’s election based on factual evidence presented. The PDP stressed that while Governor Sule has the right to challenge this decision through legal means, it is crucial for all parties to uphold the rule of law and due process during ongoing legal proceedings.”
The PDP asserted that Ganduje’s statement only served to escalate political tensions and undermine democratic principles. They called on political leaders from all parties to avoid making inflammatory statements that could disrupt the nation’s peace and stability.
The PDP reminded Ganduje that democracy is governed by law and that self-help methods, apart from judicial avenues, are not sanctioned by Nigerian law for political parties to resolve disputes. The PDP urged the APC Chairman and its members in Nasarawa State to reconsider their position, respect the Election Tribunal’s decision, and allow the legal process to follow its course.
Ibrahim Hamza, reiterated the party’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and the protection of Nigerians’ rights. He called on all stakeholders to collaborate in strengthening democratic institutions and maintaining peace and order in the nation.
