Nasarawa: Over 5,000 supporters join ex-IGP Adamu movement

From Abel Leonard, Lafia

No fewer than 5,000 supporters from various political groups converged on Wednesday at the Ta’al Conference Hotel in Lafia, Nasarawa State, declaring their support for the gubernatorial ambition of the former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

It was further gathered that similar solidarity gatherings and mobilisation efforts were simultaneously held across the three geopolitical zones of the state, including Akwanga and Keffi, underscoring the widening reach of the movement.

The Lafia meeting, which drew supporters from different blocs and interest groups, witnessed a formal collapse of structures by loyalists of other aspirants in favour of the former police chief.

Speaking at the event, Abdulhaq Dauda, a leading figure in the think tank of the Dr Faisal Shuaibu Support Group, said their decision to join the movement was based on shared ideology and confidence in Adamu’s leadership capacity.

“We declare for this movement not just for the sake of it, but because we have seen in him a man who shares similar ideology with our principal who stepped down. Today, we have come out in our numbers to show solidarity and support for the former Inspector General of Police,” he said.

Dauda urged supporters to remain focused and law-abiding, stressing the need for unity across party lines.

“We must come together irrespective of political differences to work for the prosperity of Nasarawa State. You will hear a lot of lies and deceit, but we must remain focused because what is important is the future of our state,” he added.

Also speaking, Comrade Dahiru Ahmed, Coordinator of the Coalition of Youth and Students for Dr Faisal Shuaibu, said the group decided to collapse its structure in support of Adamu due to concerns over the alleged imposition of candidates.

“If people at the helm of affairs are trying to force the people to support candidates they don’t believe in, then it is not ideal. That is why we decided to align with the movement. We will mobilise massively, unit by unit, and ensure our votes count,” he stated.

Ahmed expressed confidence in a credible electoral process, adding that the group would not be intimidated.

“We are not afraid. We believe the election will be free and fair, and by the will of the people, Adamu will emerge victorious,” he said.

In his remarks, Abdulmumuni Maidoki, Coordinator of the Barade Lafia Support Group, said their members resolved to back Adamu following the withdrawal of their principal, Dr Muhammed Ahmed Musa, from the race.

“Since our leader is no longer contesting, we have decided to throw our weight behind the former IGP to ensure victory at the polls,” Maidoki said.

Similarly, Dahiru Ahmed of the Wadada Volunteer Group noted that their members withdrew support from their former candidate over concerns of alleged imposition.

“We were supporting Wadada, but the moment we felt he was being imposed, we had to step back. We want a leader chosen by the people, not one imposed on them,” he said.

The event ended with a unanimous endorsement of Adamu, as speakers called on supporters to remain united and committed ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State.
