Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, on Saturday, commissioned completed road projects in Akwanga and Wamba Local Government Areas as part of activities marking the 30th anniversary of the state.
The projects included the 5.6-kilometre Akwanga bypass, a one-kilometre road constructed by the Akwanga Local Government Council and another one-kilometre road executed by the Wamba Local Government Council.
Speaking on Saturday during the commissioning of the bypass in Akwanga, Sule said the project would ease traffic congestion, reduce accidents, shorten travel time and open up new areas for investment.
“It has actually provided an opportunity to reduce the congestion at the roundabout in Akwanga and reduce accidents in that area,” the governor said.
Sule explained that the bypass was initially conceived as an alternative route but was later upgraded to federal highway standard after additional funding was required to complete the project.
The governor also rejected a proposal to name the bypass after him, saying it would be inappropriate to attach his name to a project constructed with public funds.
Instead, he requested that the road be named after his late friend and former Deputy Governor of the state, Damishi Luka Barau.
“I cannot construct something as a governor using public resources and name it again after myself. No, I think that is not proper,” Sule said.
He commended the Akwanga Local Government Chairman, Hon. Safiyanu Isa Andaha, for using council resources to construct the one-kilometre road commissioned during the anniversary activities.
“This road was actually a very difficult road to manoeuvre in the past. Today, you are not asking the state government to do it, but you at the local government level have used your resources to carry out this road,” he said.

The governor later proceeded to Wamba where he commissioned the one-kilometre Justice Musa Lawal Nagogo Road constructed by the Wamba Local Government Council.
Sule commended the council chairman for executing the project and providing drainage infrastructure, saying the road would continue to serve the people beyond the chairman’s tenure.
He also highlighted ongoing projects in Wamba, including roads linking the area with Mangar, Jimia, Aliza and Nakiya, as well as the proposed stadium.
According to him, development projects executed in one part of the state could have economic benefits for neighbouring communities.
“Some things that were not done in Wamba, if they are done in Akwanga, it is done for the people of Wamba, it is done for the people of Nasarawa Eggon,” he said.
Sule also inspected ongoing work at the Dalhatu Araf Specialists Hospital in Lafia as part of activities marking the state’s 30th anniversary.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, said the road projects were part of the infrastructure development initiatives being implemented to mark Nasarawa State’s 30th anniversary.
The Managing Director of the Nasarawa State Urban Development Agency, Engr. Mohammed Yahaya Adamu, said the Akwanga bypass had reduced the distance between the Keffi-Akwanga and Akwanga-Jos federal highways from about 9.2 kilometres to approximately five kilometres.
Also speaking, ALGON/Akwanga Local Government Chairman, Hon. Safiyanu Isa Andaha, described the one-kilometre road as significant, saying that, to the best of his knowledge, no previous chairman of the council had constructed a tarred road with local government resources.
The commissioning ceremonies were attended by Deputy Governor, Dr Emmanuel Akabe; members of the State Executive Council; local government chairmen; traditional rulers; senior government officials; political leaders and community leaders.
