The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Nasarawa State, Dr David Emmanuel Ombugadu, has promised to harness the state’s abundant gold, lithium and wolframite deposits to improve the living conditions of its people, declaring that a state so rich in mineral resources should not remain poor.
Ombugadu made the pledge on Saturday in Lafia during the flag-off of his campaign for the 2027 governorship election, where the PDP declared its determination to return to power in the state.
He said Nasarawa was endowed with enormous mineral resources, but expressed concern that the wealth had not translated into prosperity for the majority of the people.
According to him, the state’s resources should be used to create opportunities and improve the standard of living of residents rather than benefiting only a few individuals.
“Nasarawa is rich in gold, lithium and wolframite and should not be poor,” Ombugadu said.
The PDP candidate also promised to give priority to security, particularly the protection of farmers, saying farmers must be able to return to their farms without fear.
He said his administration, if elected, would work towards creating an environment where farmers could carry out their activities safely and contribute to the state’s economy.
Ombugadu further promised to improve healthcare delivery, particularly for women and children, with a commitment to ensuring that drugs are available in public hospitals.
He said his proposed government would be one “where everyone matters”, promising to place the welfare of residents at the centre of his administration.
At the campaign flag-off, the National Deputy Chairman of the PDP, North, Barrister Yusuf Nya Agirikwe, declared that the party was determined to reclaim Nasarawa State in the 2027 election. Agirikwe said the turnout of supporters at the event had reinforced his belief that the PDP remained strongly rooted in the state.

“We have been hearing from far that Nasarawa State is PDP. I have come to establish it myself today that PDP has the mandate of the people to rule them in this state,” he said, as supporters responded with chants of “PDP! Power to the people!”
The PDP national deputy chairman, however, told party supporters that winning the election would require them not only to vote but also to protect their votes.
“We can only actualise this if you will be able to vote and defend your votes. Are you going to do it?” Agirikwe asked.
He also conveyed greetings from the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, and the party’s national leader and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, who he said were absent because of national engagements.
Agirikwe said the large turnout in Lafia was an indication of support for the party and its leadership.
“From today, go and tell your friends that PDP is the winning party. Go out and bring your votes,” he told the supporters.
Ombugadu, while thanking the party supporters for their sacrifices and commitment, urged them to remain united and protect their votes during the 2027 election.
He said the objective was to secure a government that would represent the interests of the people and address challenges affecting farmers, families and communities across the state.
