Scott McTominay, a 27-year-old midfielder, has left Manchester United to join Napoli for a fee of £25.7 million.

McTominay, who joined United’s soccer school at age five, spent his entire career with the club, making his debut in 2017. He played 255 games for United, scoring 10 goals in 43 appearances last season.

However, the arrival of Manuel Ugarte from Paris St-Germain likely would have reduced McTominay’s playing time. In a farewell message, McTominay expressed gratitude for his time at Old Trafford, stating, “I’ve absolutely loved it and I’m very, very grateful for the football club, and I’m ready for a new challenge, and I’m ready to go and embrace it and take it by storm.”

Manchester United financially benefits from McTominay’s departure because Premier League Profit and Sustainability regulations provide the homegrown player more leeway.

Manager Erik ten Hag acknowledged mixed emotions about the transfer, saying, “I’m very happy for him. It’s also [a good deal] for us, but it is mixed because I wouldn’t prefer to lose him because he’s Manchester United in everything.”

Napoli, managed by Antonio Conte, also recently signed striker Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea. They are also reportedly pursuing McTominay’s Scotland teammate, Billy Gilmour, from Brighton.
