The Comrade Mayomi Adeboye Adekanye-led National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council, Ondo Axis, has given account of its stewardship, describing its tenure as “the unified and redefined era.”

In a statement sent to Daily Sun as it prepares to vacate office, the council said it pursued “proactive unionism, accountability, and student-centered development” across tertiary institutions in Ondo State, with focus on educational reforms, empowerment, health, security and institutional governance.

On educational policy reforms and academic relief, the council disclosed that it “negotiated directly with the management of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, to abolish the newly introduced weekly late-payment penalty and successfully secured the complete waiver of all accrued fines for affected students.”

The leadership also said it maintained steady advocacy throughout the academic strike action, pressing state authorities for increased education investment, “an effort that contributed to a major allocation boost for state-owned universities.”

At Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, the council said it “facilitated the prompt reopening of the school fees and course registration portal” following high-level engagements with university management.

It added that it hosted the Academic and Career Empowerment Summit to prepare students for post-graduation opportunities, alongside “structured dialogues with academic union leadership regarding staff welfare, government agreements, and academic continuity.”

On economic empowerment and entrepreneurship, the council said it organized an empowerment summit honoring Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, “equipping student-entrepreneurs with essential commercial tools, including generators, washing machines, refrigerators, hair dryers, clippers, sterilizers, and ovens to support campus enterprise.”

The administration said it also “represented Ondo State students in an empowerment program hosted by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Hon. Sunday Asefon, distributing laptops directly to student beneficiaries.”

Through the Office of the Director of Socials and Culture, Comrade Ayomide Egbayelo, it “hosted multi-campus trade expos across university campuses” to create direct marketing channels for student-owned businesses.

On health and welfare, the council under Welfare Director Comrade Hammed Kuyenja “spearheaded comprehensive health screenings across tertiary institutions, delivering free tests for various health conditions including blood sugar, genotype, and eye care.”

It also convened a landmark symposium on mental wellness titled “Men’s Mental Health: Breaking the Silence, Building Support and Promoting Emotional Well-being” via the Office of Vice Chairman Inter-Campus, Comrade Medoye Taiwo, “establishing formal peer support channels.”

For community outreach, the administration said it “directed humanitarian visitations to orphanage homes, including the Southwest Gender Directors’ outreach themed Touching Lives with Kindness, led by Gender Director, Comrade Raheem Jemilat Awoieza.”

On campus security and safety, the council said “safety remained a cornerstone of the administration’s agenda,” noting that it “spearheaded strategic advocacy against reckless heavy-duty truck operations endangering student lives in Akungba-Akoko, prompting safety compliance measures from state traffic authorities.”

To address housing exploitation, the council said it “broadcasted statewide radio dialogues titled Protecting Our Students: Security and Fair Rent Reforms to address exploitation by local landlords and advocate for safer student housing.”

It also held “high-level security consultations with the Governor of Ondo State, the Commissioner of Police, the Commandant of the Amotekun Corps, and the Comptroller of Immigration Service, strengthening community policing frameworks to protect academic environments.”

On administrative modernization, the council said it “launched its official website via the Office of the General Secretary, Comrade Oladele Oluwafemi Emmanuel,” setting “a new standard for transparency and record-keeping.”

It also published “the maiden edition of its official magazine, The Redefining Strides, documenting the council’s policies, engagements, and academic achievements throughout the tenure.”

To improve operations, it hosted the “Secretariat Functions Redefined workshop to integrate modern technological tools into daily union secretarial workflows and documentation.”

On civic and inter-campus activities, the council said “civic engagement was prioritized through a multi-day voter registration drive across Ondo State campuses, enrolling students into the national voter register.”

It also organized “an inter-institutional sports tournament through Sports Director Comrade Ayobami John, alongside academic symposia, inter-campus debates, spelling bees, and essay contests, awarding cash prizes to outstanding participants.”

The administration equally said it “secured an operational transit bus donated by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to enhance council mobility, facilitated political appointments for student leaders in technical education, and actively participated in national student union elections.”
