The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Headquarters has paid a courtesy visit to the management of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Otto-Ijanikin, to seek the resuscitation of a democratic Students’ Union and the construction of a befitting SUG building.
The delegation was received by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, and other members of the university management at the Vice Chancellor’s Office.
Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye gave a brief history of the institution, noting that LASUED has produced its first set of graduating students and is preparing for its maiden convocation ceremony.
She reaffirmed the university’s commitment to students’ welfare and said the management remains responsive to students’ genuine needs and aspirations.
Delivering his remarks, NANS Secretary General, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, commended the management for maintaining a disciplined, safe, and conducive learning environment, as well as its zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment.
He also appreciated the Vice Chancellor and her team for employment opportunities extended to some alumni of the university’s legacy college who are former leaders of the students’ body.
During the meeting, the Secretary General presented NANS’ key requests, including the resuscitation of a democratic Students’ Union in the institution, the construction of a Students’ Union secretariat, and more employment opportunities for student leaders where applicable.

Also speaking, the Chief of Staff to the NANS Secretary, Comrade Adegboye Adeboye, urged students to stay away from social vices such as drug abuse and cultism.
He highlighted NANS’ collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), saying the partnerships are aimed at safeguarding campuses and promoting responsible conduct among students.
In her response, Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye commended the NANS delegation for their maturity and constructive engagement, noting that they had projected a positive image of the national students’ body.
She assured the delegation that the requests presented would receive due consideration and that the management would communicate its position to the association after necessary consultations.
The Vice Chancellor further urged students to channel their concerns through NANS rather than resorting to the dissemination of misleading information on social media.
The highlight of the visit was the decoration of Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye as a NANS National Ambassador Against Social Vices, in recognition of her zero-tolerance stance on social vices among students and youth.
