The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians against sharing a viral social media list claiming to identify fake, adulterated and substandard products in the country, saying the list did not originate from the agency.
NAFDAC, in a press release issued on Friday, October 9, 2026, by its Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, clarified that the circulating list should not be regarded as an official regulatory alert, recall notice or safety communication.
“The Agency clarifies that the list did not emanate from NAFDAC and should not be regarded as an official regulatory alert, recall notice or safety communication,” the statement said.
The agency explained that it does not classify products as fake or unsafe without following established regulatory procedures, including investigations, sampling and, where necessary, scientific and laboratory verification.
“NAFDAC does not declare products fake, adulterated or unsafe without due regulatory processes, including investigation, sampling and, where necessary, scientific and laboratory verification,” it stated.
The agency urged members of the public to disregard the list and refrain from circulating the unverified information, warning that such claims could create unnecessary public concern and damage the reputation and business interests of legitimate manufacturers, distributors and retailers.
It also stressed that the appearance of a product’s name or photograph on a social media list does not establish that the product is counterfeit or unsafe.
“The appearance of a product name or photograph on a social media list does not, in itself, constitute an official NAFDAC finding that the product is fake or unsafe,” the statement added.
NAFDAC said its official public alerts provide consumers, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders with information about products requiring regulatory attention and the appropriate measures to take.
The agency added that it conducts market surveillance and takes enforcement action, including removing affected products from circulation and destroying them when necessary, after investigations and scientific assessments establish the need for intervention.
It urged Nigerians to obtain information about product alerts, recalls, withdrawals, suspensions and other regulatory actions through its official communication channels.
