My wife’s support took OTP label higher – Opeyemi

Fashion entrepreneur and content creator, Akinwale Toheeb Opeyemi has recounted how his wife’s financial support helped him expand his business, OTP Label, from retail to wholesale.

The 27-year-old entrepreneur said the transition required about ₦1.5 million, which he raised by combining his savings with funds provided by his wife.

Opeyemi said the decision was risky because he was investing a substantial amount in a business model he had never run at that scale. He was also worried about whether the clothes would sell and whether he would recover the investment.

Despite the uncertainty, he said his wife believed in his vision and supported the move.

“Looking back now, my wife’s support at that stage is something I will always appreciate because she believed in what I was trying to build,” he said.

Opeyemi, who lost both parents at different stages of his life, said his experiences taught him resilience and the courage to make difficult decisions.

He also said one of his early business lessons was that personal preferences do not always determine what customers will buy.

“One thing I learnt early is that not every product you personally like will sell. Sometimes you can be excited about something and put money into it, only to realise that your customers want something different,” he said.

According to him, his long-term goal is to transform OTP Label into a trusted wholesale fashion platform for young Nigerians seeking to start or expand clothing businesses.

“I want OTP Label to become much bigger than just somewhere people come to buy clothes. I want it to be one of the places people think about when they want to start or grow their clothing business,” he said.
