Mutfwang rallies Plateau for Tinubu, launches second-term campaign

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has stepped up political mobilisation for the 2027 general elections with the inauguration of a campaign council to coordinate the re-election bids of President Bola Tinubu and himself, bringing together former governors, serving political office holders and other influential stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The council, which has also been mandated to mobilise support for other APC candidates, is expected to coordinate political activities across the state’s three senatorial districts ahead of the January 16 and February 6, 2027 elections, as the governor seeks to consolidate his political structure and secure a second term in office.

The Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, who disclosed this in a statement, said the council was inaugurated on Monday, November 2, bringing together prominent political figures, former public office holders, community leaders and party stakeholders in what the administration described as a united effort to deliver victory for the Tinubu/Shettima and Mutfwang/Piyo tickets.

Mutfwang will chair the campaign council, while APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, will serve as adviser. Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo is Deputy Chairperson I, while Plateau State APC Chairman, Rufus Bature, is Vice Chairman II.

Former Director-General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Joseph Ari, was appointed Director-General of the council, which also has Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, among its members.

Other prominent members include former governors Joshua Dariye and Simon Lalong; former Deputy Governor Pauline Tallen; Senator Simon Mwadkwon; and retired Air Vice Marshal Napoleon Bali, who will coordinate campaign activities in the Southern Senatorial Zone.

Serving members of the National and State Assemblies, APC candidates and other stakeholders were also enlisted in the campaign structure, which is expected to coordinate grassroots mobilisation and political engagements across the 17 local government areas of the state.

The inauguration comes as preparations gather momentum for President Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Plateau State on Saturday, November 14, with Ari calling on more than 115 support groups and residents to turn out in large numbers to welcome the President.

Ari described the proposed visit as an opportunity to showcase the Federal Government’s interventions in Plateau and demonstrate the administration’s commitment to the state’s development.

Bere said the campaign would not be limited to political mobilisation, explaining that Mutfwang had charged members of the council to engage residents on issues affecting their daily lives, including security, economic opportunities, infrastructure, education, healthcare and agriculture.

According to him, the governor believes that the electioneering period should provide an opportunity for honest conversations about governance and the challenges confronting the state, rather than merely serving as a platform for political rhetoric.

He said the 2027 election would offer the electorate an opportunity to assess the administration’s performance since Mutfwang assumed office in May 2023, particularly its efforts to restore confidence in governance, rebuild public institutions and address economic and security challenges.

The governor’s spokesman maintained that the administration had undertaken what he described as difficult but necessary steps to reposition the state and lay the foundation for sustainable development.

“Having undertaken the difficult work of recovery, reconstruction and repositioning, his administration is beginning to see citizens reap the benefits of these deliberate interventions,” Bere said.

On security, he said the government had revitalised Operation Rainbow, strengthened community-based security arrangements through the training and deployment of personnel and Forest Guards, and incorporated modern surveillance technology into the state’s security architecture.

According to him, the interventions were designed to improve intelligence gathering, monitoring and rapid response to security threats, particularly in communities that had experienced persistent attacks and other security challenges.

He also highlighted the administration’s investments in transportation, healthcare, agriculture, education, water supply, energy, tourism and road infrastructure, describing them as essential to improving living conditions and expanding economic opportunities.

Bere said the introduction of subsidised Metro bus services had helped make transportation more affordable for residents, while ongoing road projects were opening up communities, facilitating the movement of agricultural produce and stimulating commercial activities.

The spokesman further drew attention to federal infrastructure projects being executed in Plateau under President Tinubu, including the ongoing construction of the Akwanga-Jos Road, rehabilitation of the Sharram-Garram-Babban Lamba Road and approval of the Mararaban Jama’a-Kanke-Langtang-Shendam-Ibi Road, extending towards Taraba State.

He said the projects demonstrated the benefits of cooperation between the federal and state governments and would improve connectivity, trade and economic activities within Plateau and neighbouring states.

Bere also acknowledged humanitarian interventions by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, particularly the distribution of relief materials and other forms of assistance to vulnerable individuals and communities.

He maintained that Mutfwang’s political vision was anchored on bringing the people of Plateau together under a common direction, stressing that the governor had called for peaceful, factual and issue-based campaigns.

The governor, according to him, believes that political competition should not undermine the unity of the state or distract from efforts to address the developmental challenges facing its people.

Quoting an African proverb, Bere said, “Little by little, the bird builds its nest,” explaining that the administration regarded continuity and sustained investment as essential to consolidating the progress already recorded.

He said the governor’s second-term ambition was driven by the need to build on existing interventions, complete ongoing projects and sustain efforts to reposition Plateau for economic growth and stability.

With the inauguration of the campaign council and mobilisation already underway for Tinubu’s November 14 visit, the APC leadership in Plateau is seeking to bring its political structures, support groups and stakeholders under a coordinated campaign arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections.
