The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), has elected Mustapha Abdullahi as its President after defeating former D’Tigers captain, Olumide Oyedeji and former international Ejike Ugboaja.

Abdullahi scored 40 out of the 48 total votes cast to emerge victorious during the Thursday’s election in Abuja, relegating Oyedeji, who polled eight votes and Ugboaja who could not secure a single votes to first and second runners-ups.

Erstwhile presidential aspirant, Igoche Mark, had earlier withdrawn from the race on Wednesday, citing concerns over the fairness and credibility of the electoral process.

Abdullahi, Director-General of Energy Commission of Nigeria succeeds outgoing president Musa Kida.

At the end of the poll, Ugo Udezue emerged as NBBF Vice-President unopposed, having contested as sole candidate for the position.

The new leadership is expected to address key issues affecting Nigerian basketball, including domestic competitions, grassroots development, players’ welfare, funding and the administration of the game.

Abdullahi takes over at a crucial period for the sport, with the national women’s team, D’Tigress, enjoying notable international success and stakeholders calling for stronger structures to sustain basketball development across the country.

His administration will be expected to build on those achievements while strengthening domestic basketball and creating better opportunities for players and other stakeholders.
