MTI Nigeria offers to assist ICMC get registered, to curb fake institutes

From Okwe Obi, Abuja

The Mediation Training Institute (MTI-Nigeria) has offered to assist and support the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) to operate legally.

The President/Chief Executive of MTI-Nigeria, Dr Segun Ogunyannwo, said the assistance would be through accreditation by the Centre for Management Development (CMD) and help in getting their Bill passed into law so that they can be properly “chartered.”

Ogunyannwo, in a statement yesterday, explained that the Nigerian Council for Management Development (NCMD) Act 2022 requires that all organisations and institutions involved in training and consultancy services be accredited, along with three principal officers (possibly the President, Registrar and Director of Training), with the CMD.

According to him, any organisation or institution that is not accredited by CMD operates illegally and is therefore not qualified to train, certify and induct professionals.

“My personal investigation reveals that only Mediation Training Institute (MTI-Nigeria) of ALL the ADR organisations in Nigeria has fully complied with the legal requirement to get the organisation as well as three principal officers, accredited by CMD.

“I was the ‘Face’ of ICMC for two decades, and I am pleased to extend a hand of fellowship to the leadership of ICMC to ensure compliance with NCMD Act 2022!!!

“Mediation Training Institute (MTI-Nigeria) will be glad to do the same for other ADR organisations that are yet to do the needful.

“We need to protect the ADR community in Nigeria. We are focusing on ICMC because our primary constituency is mediation.

“We must guard the space jealously and ensure that all organisations involved in mediation training and consultancy are accredited by the Centre for Management Development (CMD), along with three principal officers. That is what the law stipulates. Otherwise, they are operating illegally.

“If you have done the needful, kindly let us see documented proof of the same, please!!!

“All ADR organisations and institutions claiming to be ‘chartered’ need to have a Bill passed by both Houses of the National Assembly with the assent of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Yes, the institute must be established by an Act of Parliament, which grants it the charter and defines its powers, functions, and scope of operation.

“Until the above is done, using the name ‘chartered’ is at best speculative, at worst deceptive, and an attempt to mislead the public and their members,” he said.
