Mourinho in fresh trouble

Jose Mourinho

The Football Association is set to investigate comments made by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho as he walked along the touchline after the 3-2 win over Newcastle.

The Press Association reports that the FA will probe Mourinho’s reaction following United’s dramatic late victory at Old Trafford, with footage showing the coach saying something – at one point while looking into a camera – as he headed towards the tunnel.

Mourinho went into Saturday evening’s match under huge pressure, with senior United sources shooting down reports emanating on Friday night that the manager would be sacked at the weekend regardless of the result.

Newcastle, however, looked determined to give the United hierarchy a difficult decision to make as they went 2-0 up within 10 minutes at Old Trafford.

Mourinho shook things up at half-time by deploying Paul Pogba in a deeper role, and Juan Mata’s free-kick started the fightback with 20 minutes left.

Anthony Martial equalised with a fierce drive 14 minutes from time, and the much-maligned Alexis Sanchez – named as a substitute for the match – came off the bench to head home a 90th-minute winner.
