The summer is nearly upon us and, with it, the promise of a whole host of sporting tournaments. From fiendishly difficult footballing tests to games of wit and skill, we’ve collated some of the most exciting sports events that are happening this summer, alongside all of the information that fans will need to get the most out of the coverage. So, if you love nothing more than fierce competition and athletes who are at the very top of their game, then look no further.
African Cup of Nations
When it comes to events hosted by African nations, the African Cup of Nations is the one which the majority of us are the most excited about. It was announced in 2019 that Ivory Coast would be hosting the competition this summer, but, owing to the rainy season, they’re postponing until next January. Whilst this does take the tournament technically out of the summer months, it’s a classic summer sporting event and such a large one that we felt it still deserved a place on the list. The Ivorian government has been working around the clock to ensure that there will be six stadiums to host all of the matches, with the majority in Abidjan and the remainder in Bouake, Yamoussoukro, and San Pedro. If you can’t wait for the action to begin then the good news is that there are already qualifying matches taking place all over Africa, to decide which teams will win a place in the final competition.
World Series of Poker
There’s very little to rival the tense atmosphere of a high-stakes poker game. The concentration on the players’ faces means that the raise of an eyebrow can be enough to throw off somebody’s suspicions. If you like a quieter, more calculated sport, then watching some of the action from the World Series of Poker (WSOP) might be just the kind of sporting tournament that suits you. Whilst the actual WSOP will be taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada, as usual, if you’re looking to test out your own poker skills then you can do so much closer to home. The same company that organizes the event has launched an online poker website where you can enjoy WSOP free play, meaning there’s no need to wager your own money to play poker.

US Open
Our final pick is one of the greatest tennis tournaments in the world, the US Open. This tournament has been taking place since 1987, and is the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season. The other three tournaments are the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon, in Great Britain. This year, the US Open will be running from the 28th of August through to the 10th of September and will be held at both the Arthur Ashe Stadium and the Louis Armstrong stadium. If you’re interested in watching specific players then the schedule is already on the website. If you can afford the airfare then there are still some tickets available too, which would certainly be an exciting day out.
