A traditional ruler in Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Moses Ngele, has imposed a fine of N500,000 on any resident of the community who abuses chieftaincy regalia in the area.
The monarch also imposed one he-goat, 11 native kola nuts and a ritual hot drink against abuse of the chieftaincy regalia.
In a statement he personally signed, Ngele said the fines became necessary following unauthorised wearing of red caps and other chieftaincy regalia in the community. He described the abuse of the chieftaincy regalia as desecration against the Igbo tradition.
The statement titled “Pronouncement on the abuse of traditional regalia (a degree for preservation of Igbo cultural sanctity)”, reads: “The unauthorised wearing of the Red Cap and other chieftaincy regalia is, hereby, forbidden in Ishiagu kingdom.
“This act desecrates our sacred Igbo traditions and dishonours our heritage. Penalties for violation include: a fine of N500,000, one he-goat, 11 native kola nuts and a ritual hot drink.
“Furthermore, we demand that any traditional title holder from any recognised traditional institution outside Ishiagu must present a photocopy of his certificate to the palace of Agu, upon his return to the kingdom for identification.
“This directive takes immediate effect. Let all subjects treat this matter with the utmost gravity”.
