The emergence of Alhaji Mohammed Idris as Minister of the Year is significant in many ways. He is a seasoned media entrepreneur, public relations expert, and public servant who has distinguished himself as Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation. He brought over three decades of professional communication experience to the federal cabinet.
Mohammed pursued a deep academic interest in language and communication, and graduated from the Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Studies in 1987.
Driven by the zeal to further refine his skills, he later attended Bayero University, Kano, where he earned a Master’s degree in English Studies in 1995. This background in linguistics broadened the foundation for his professional career.
Before joining public service, he built a highly successful media empire in the private sector. In 2011, he founded Blueprint Newspapers, a widely read publication that prints in English and Hausa languages. He also established Bifocal Communications, a leading Public Relations consultancy firm, and acquired Kings Broadcasting Network, the parent company of WE 106.5 FM in Abuja.
His giant strides earned him recognition for which he was elected as the General Secretary of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria. He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, reflecting his significant influence in the communications industry.
Idris’ transition into mainstream politics was reshaped by his entry into the All Progressives Congress, culminating in his emergence as a governorship aspirant in Niger State in the 2023 elections. Although he finished second in the primary election, the leadership of his party knew he had electoral value, loyalty and communication expertise for which he was appointed as the Director of Strategic Communications for the Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council, managing public messaging during the presidential race.
As Minister of Information and National Orientation, he has steered the federal information machinery away from aggressive propaganda towards an approach rooted in transparency and timely updates.
Some of the key achievements under his ministerial leadership include the launch of the Citizen Engagement Series, which established direct feedback loops between top government officials and ordinary citizens through town hall meetings across the country.
He has also led national campaigns addressing the dangers of disinformation, advocating for responsible media practice without choking press freedom. Furthermore, he drove momentum back into Nigeria’s sluggish transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, expanding infrastructure to give citizens broader access to educational broadcasts.
As the Minister of Information and National Orientation, he has consistently championed the revival of national values, emphasising patriotism, unity, and rebranding Nigeria’s global image.
For these reasons and several others, Alhaji Mohammed Idris is winner of The Sun Minister of the Year Award 2026.
