OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi has received a last-minute call-up to Nigeria’s Super Eagles Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad after Bayer Leverkusen ace Victor Boniface was forced to withdraw through injury.
Moffi, who has four goals in 14 appearances for the Super Eagles, has struggled for form with Nice this season, and as a result, he initially missed out on Nigeria’s AFCON squad, however, Boniface’s injury has opened a route to selection. It is a blow for Les Aiglons, who had hoped to be able to count on Moffi during the month of January.
The Nigeria Football Federation shared a post on its official X account and it read: “Terem Moffi replaces injured Boniface but pending the approval of CAF and concurrence of his club.”
However, the blow has been lessened given the arrival of Mohamed-Ali Cho on Monday. The France U20 international completed his €12m move from Real Sociedad, and he will provide extra depth up-front, which given Moffi’s absence, will be essential.
In Moffi’s absence, Cho will compete with Evan Guessand and Gaëtan Laborde for a place in Le Gym’s attack. The three players are essentially fighting for two spots with Laborde often playing out on the right-hand side.
