Members of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, AMLSN, have been urged not to relent in the struggle for the soul of the professional body, which has been embroiled in a needless conflict driven by the greed of a few, who have shown utter disregard for the rule of law and subsisting judicial pronouncements.
In a New Year message to members, made available to journalists, National President, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Dr. Uche Odionyenma, noted that the serial acts of deception perpetrated by a particular group of members in pursuit of their inordinate ambition had subverted decades of principled practice and convention in the management of the affairs of AMLSN and crippled its smooth operations, thereby causing the association loss of face, both locally and internationally, to the point of being suspended by the international federation of which it is a member.
While extending warm wishes to the generality of members concerned about the restoration of normalcy in the association, he said the new year is filled with renewed hope. He reiterated that members have a solemn responsibility to maintain unshakable vigilance and ensure that the cabal working against the greater interest of the majority for restoration of principles and ethical practice in management of the affairs of AMLSN in the months ahead.
His words: “The past year tested us deeply as professionals and as an Association. It exposed fault lines, renewed old battles, and reminded us that the struggle for the soul of our profession is far from over. As we begin this new chapter, we must be clear-eyed and courageous: the forces that seek to weaken Medical Laboratory Science through the deliberate disregard for our legal, professional, and constitutional safeguards have not relented.

“The push to ignore extant laws, to bypass established regulatory frameworks, and to diminish the professional autonomy of Medical Laboratory Scientists is not accidental. It is systematic. It is strategic. And if left unchecked, it threatens not only our present relevance but the very future of our profession in Nigeria.
“This is why this year must not find us complacent. The laws guiding Medical Laboratory Science practice in Nigeria were not handed down as favours – they were earned through sacrifice, advocacy, and the collective struggle of those who came before us. To surrender them through silence, fear, or convenience would be a grave injustice to history and a betrayal of generations yet unborn.
“I therefore call on every Medical Laboratory Scientist, regardless of cadre, location, or years of practice, to stand firm. Resist all attempts – subtle or overt – to erode our professional space. Refuse to be complicit in arrangements that violate legal and constitutional provisions. Defend the integrity of our training, our scope of practice, and our indispensable role in healthcare delivery.
“This is not a call to hostility, but a call to lawfulness, unity, and professional courage. AMLSN remains resolute. We will continue to engage, to advocate, to challenge infractions through lawful means, and to protect the interests of our members and the dignity of our profession. But an Association is only as strong as the resolve of its members. The burden of this fight cannot rest on leadership alone—it must be shared by all.
“As we journey through this year, may we find strength in unity, wisdom in restraint, and boldness in truth. Let us recommit ourselves to excellence in service, ethical practice, and unwavering loyalty to the profession we are privileged to serve. The battle is not over, but neither is our resolve.”
Odionyenma wished the members a purposeful, courageous, and professionally rewarding New Year.
