MLSCN pledges support to WAPCMLS goals in Nigeria

From Fred Ezeh, Abuja

Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), has pledged the support of the Council to the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS) to enable the College realise its laudable goals for Nigeria health care system.

A statement from the Corporate Affairs Office of MLSCN, on Monday, indicated that Dr Tosan Erhabo, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of MLSCN, made the pledge in Abuja, during the recent courtesy visit of the Regional President of the College, Prof. Eugene Ikeh, who was accompanied by the President, Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria, Mr Manason Rubainu, and Dr. Mrs Stella Udoh, the College Administrator.

MLSCN Registrar, in his remarks, noted the sincerity of purpose and enthusiasm in members of the delegation, and promised that the Council would be willing to consider suggestions regarding possible areas of collaboration with the College.

He said: “As a Council, we are willing to do what is expected of us to ensure that the College succeeds. However, it must be noted that MLSCN is not in competition with any other government Agency. Rather, we are all stakeholders in the affairs of the College, who have a lot to contribute.”

Earlier, the Regional President of the College, Prof. Eugene Ikeh, noted that the purpose of the visit was to explore areas of possible collaboration with the Council such as regulating the training of the Fellows of the College.

He said: “We have had the induction of Foundation Fellows and the Elected Fellows of the College, and we think it would help the College and the profession if they can be registered with the Council to enhance their status within the profession as is the case with other professions in the country and other countries in the sub region.”

He suggested that Nigerian holders of other Fellowships can also be encouraged to enroll and sit the College’s examination and become Fellows of the College. “This will enable them to work in other countries in the sub region.”

He, therefore, solicited stronger synergy among stakeholders, particularly the Council, to help the College actualise its mandate.

On his part, the President of Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria, Mr Manason Rubainu, noted that an area worth exploring was the possibility of MLSCN accrediting the College as a training institution and, thereafter, recognise its Fellowship as a specialist qualification.
