In a historic display of cultural pride, unity, humanitarian commitment, and community excellence, the Mkpoko Igbo Tokai Region, Japan, hosted a remarkable three-in-one cultural gala and awards ceremony in Nagoya on November 23, 2025.
The landmark event, which attracted over 1,000 guests, combined the End-of-Year Thanksgiving Party, the official launch of the union’s calendar, and a prestigious Award Ceremony that honoured distinguished individuals for their exceptional contributions to the Igbo community, the Nigerian diaspora, and humanity.
The colourful gathering brought together Nigerians, Africans, Japanese spouses, community leaders, diplomats, and international guests, including representatives from the Gambian Consulate and the leadership of the Ghanaian community in Japan. The occasion became one of the most remarkable gatherings of Nigerians and Africans in Japan, celebrating the strength of unity, culture, and collective progress.
Founded in Japan in 2003 as the first-ever Igbo socio-cultural union in the country, Mkpoko Igbo Tokai Region has remained committed to preserving Igbo heritage, promoting unity, and providing support for Nigerians and Africans living in Japan.
The organisation recently recorded a major transformation following an amendment of its constitution to accommodate all Igbo residents across Japan. This inclusive move has revitalised the union, bringing back members who had previously drifted away while attracting new members from different parts of the Japanese archipelago.
The current administration has been widely recognised for promoting peace, safety, unity, and community development. Members travelled from different regions of Japan to participate in the celebration, reconnect with one another, and appreciate the remarkable progress recorded by the union.
A major highlight of the celebration as captured by Nigerian journalist and public analyst, Njoku Macdonald Obinna was the unveiling of the union’s first high-quality calendar alongside its traditional cultural almanac. The leadership explained that the initiative was not simply a fundraising project but part of a broader humanitarian vision aimed at strengthening support systems for Nigerians and Africans in Japan and beyond.
The success of the event was driven by the dedication of the planning team, spearheaded by Ogbuefi Tochukwu Odike, Chairman of the Organising Committee, whose strategic planning ensured a seamless and memorable execution.

Mkpoko Igbo Tokai Region has continued to serve as a dependable social support network, assisting individuals facing challenges abroad by providing emergency support, helping stranded persons secure temporary accommodation and employment opportunities, guiding community members through immigration and administrative processes, and advocating for those experiencing legal difficulties.
The organisation has also extended its humanitarian activities to Nigeria through outreach programmes, including visits to motherless babies’ homes across parts of the South-East. Building on the success of these initiatives, the union has set a long-term goal of extending its support to motherless babies’ homes across all 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory.
The historic celebration was further honoured by the presence of Her Excellency Florence I. A. Adeseke, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Japan, who attended alongside her husband and members of staff of the Nigerian Embassy in Tokyo. Her presence added diplomatic significance and prestige to the occasion.
For the first time in its history, Mkpoko Igbo Tokai Region introduced an Award Ceremony to celebrate individuals whose leadership, sacrifices, philanthropy, and community service have made a remarkable impact. The selection of award recipients was based on genuine contributions, service, and influence within the community rather than financial status. The process involved careful assessment and collaboration with different state and regional unions across Japan to identify individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment.
Among the distinguished personalities recognised were Hon. Chief Engr. Chike Uduma, Enyoha I of Japan, Chairman of Mkpoko Igbo Tokai Region, Japan, honoured for his exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening the union.
Also honoured was Triple Chief Celestine Isaac, Onyeaghananwanneya, Vice Chairman of Mkpoko Igbo Tokai Region, for his dedication to community development and unity, while HRM Chris Brown Umeh, Igwe Ala Na Azunwa I of Japan, was celebrated for his royal leadership, cultural preservation, and outstanding contributions to the advancement of the Igbo community in Japan.
Other distinguished award recipients included Hon. Emeka V. Egbogota, President of Nigerian Union Japan and Chairman, Igbo Union Kansai, Japan; Chief Kelvin C. The atmosphere in Nagoya became electrifying during the cultural displays as traditional Igbo dancers, performers, and magnificent masquerades showcased the beauty and richness of Nigerian heritage before an international audience.
For many Japanese spouses of members and diaspora children who have never visited Nigeria, the cultural presentation provided a unique opportunity to experience the traditions, values, and identity of their Nigerian heritage. The presence of representatives from the Gambian Consulate and the Ghanaian community further strengthened the message of African unity, friendship, and cooperation.
The successful celebration has once again positioned Mkpoko Igbo Tokai Region as a shining example of a diaspora organisation committed to cultural preservation, humanitarian service, unity, and community development. It was not merely a celebration of achievements but a powerful reminder that culture, compassion, and collective responsibility remain essential tools for building stronger communities across borders.
