Missing luggage: Qatar Airways faces N11.8m compensation claim

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways is facing a legal action after a Lagos-based law firm, Brown & Cooper Solicitors, gave the airline a 14-day ultimatum to recover and return a passenger’s allegedly missing luggage or pay N11.812 million as compensation.

The demand was contained in a letter dated July 25, 2026, written on behalf of Mr. Peter Omopariola Fowoyo, who alleged that one of his three checked bags went missing after he travelled aboard Qatar Airways Flight QR1407 from Doha, Qatar, to Lagos on June 27, 2026.

According to the solicitors, Fowoyo checked in three bags with tag numbers 0157264140, 0157264141 and 0157264142 before boarding the flight. However, upon arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, only two of the bags were delivered to him.

The law firm said the passenger waited for several hours at the baggage claim area before discovering that the only unclaimed luggage left was a similar-looking bag that did not belong to him.

It added that Fowoyo immediately reported the incident to officials of the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO), where he completed a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and was assured that efforts would be made to trace the missing luggage.

Brown & Cooper Solicitors, however, alleged that despite the report and subsequent follow-up, the luggage has yet to be recovered.

According to the firm, the missing medium-sized black briefcase contained valuables, including $3,000 in cash, two gold wristwatches, medication, 15 pairs of new trousers, a pair of new blue Nike canvas shoes, a pair of new black shoes, a pair of blue Adidas canvas shoes, two packs of new singlets, 10 pairs of new socks, a vegetable cutter, two packets of biscuits and a packet of cashew nuts.

The solicitors also stated that receipts for the listed items were inside the missing luggage, making it impossible for their client to provide documentary evidence of purchase.

In the letter, the law firm demanded that Qatar Airways recover and return the luggage with all its contents or pay ₦11,812,000, being the alleged value of the missing items, within 14 days of receiving the demand.

The solicitors warned that failure to comply with the demand would leave their client with no option but to institute legal proceedings against the airline without further notice.

Qatar Airways had not publicly responded to the allegations or the compensation demand as of the time of filing this report.
