The attention of US4US Movement Cross River State has been drawn to an obnoxious campaign of calumny orchestrated by a handful of faceless entities, under the auspices of APC Legacy group in Cross River State, against one of us, Dr. Betta Edu, the workaholic and assiduous National Women Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Arising from the tissues of lies being peddled by these faceless rabble-rousers, and the need to set the records straight, it has become absolutely imperative that the US4US MOVEMENT categorically correct some ominous impressions and misrepresentation of facts encapsulated in the malicious publication by the APC Legacy group against Dr. Betta Edu. Therefore, we deem it fit to state as follows;
1. That, it is insensitive and totally unbecoming for anyone to champion a campaign of calumny against Dr. Betta Edu, on the basis of her State of Origin, as nobody is more a “Cross Riverian” than Dr. Betta Edu, who obviously has sacrificed her entire life in service to humanity and the people of Cross River State. More so, it is outrightly worrisome that at this point in our nation’s history when agitation for women involvement and respect for women in Politics, remain topical, some misogynistic entities are hell-bent on campaigning against a woman who has been married to, and have served the interest of Cross River State over the years.
2. On the allegation that those who defected alongside former Governor Ben Ayade to APC in 2021, has hijacked the party, we make bold to state that such allegations are unfounded, inciting, divisive, laughable and ridiculous. It is an affront on the sensibility of true partymen that have continued to work for the unity of the Party and a total hurling of insult on the young people of Cross River State that worked to deliver the party during the last Gubernatorial Election. While we do not wish to walk the path of divisiveness and factions, it is worthy of note to remind this set of individuals parading as members of the Old APC block, that the incumbent Governor and Leader of the Party, Senator Prince Bassey Otu is a product of the Old APC, hence underscores the point that the party has not been, and cannot be hijacked by anybody or group.
3. While we understand the desperation with which these individuals seek to annihilate Dr. Betta Edu, we wish to remind them that, Dr. Betta Edu remain one of our greatest Political export from Cross River State. As National Women Leader, she canvassed and mobilized support for His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, across the nooks and crannies of our country. She stood firm, and still standing firm for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. While others were luxuriating, she walked the streets of Nigeria, campaigning and selling the renewed hope agenda. She has continued to show enormous capacity in all ramifications, which is even evident in the fact that she delivered her ward for the APC during the Presidential election, against all odds.
4. On the tenuous and frivolous claim that a Minister and House of Reps member should not come from the same Local Government Area, as it would disturb the Political apple card in that Constituency, we wish to remind these rabble-rousers that Dr. Betta Edu, as National Women Leader, did not promote disharmony and discord in her Constituency, and her appointment as Minister will not change her humble disposition.
5. Finally, while we understand that, it is democratic for people to agitate and lobby for political positions, we find it rather appalling that some individuals have resorted to campaign of calumny and blackmail, rather than remain issue-based in their agitations. As young people of Cross River State, we condemn in strong terms the attempt aimed at disparaging and despising Dr. Betta Edu, on account of her matrimony and gender. As one of US, we shall continue to support and stand with her. We call on our amiable President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to please nominate Dr. Betta Edu for ministerial appointment, as she is apparently a round peg in a round hole, and embodies the dreams and aspirations of all of US.
