Middle East conflict: Trump blasts NATO ‘cowards’ amid marines deployment

Trump hints at US talks with Iran

Donald Trump has criticised NATO allies as “cowards” over their stance on Iran, as reports indicate additional US Marines are being deployed to the Middle East amid escalating tensions.

The development comes nearly three weeks into the ongoing conflict, with Washington reportedly weighing further military options, including potential operations targeting Iran’s strategic Kharg Island.

Trump accused NATO members of failing to support efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, blaming Iran’s control of the key shipping route for rising global oil prices. “So easy for them to do, with so little risk. COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER!” he wrote on Truth Social.

He also downplayed concerns over the conflict, insisting that the joint US-Israeli campaign was progressing successfully. “It’s not even a contest,” Trump said during a White House event.

While Trump has previously ruled out deploying ground troops, reports suggest between 2,200 and 2,500 US Marines linked to the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group have been positioned at sea, with officials describing the deployment as routine operations.

Attention has focused on Kharg Island, which handles the bulk of Iran’s crude exports. A White House official said the US military could “take out” the facility if directed, underscoring the strategic importance of the target.

The situation has heightened concerns over global energy supplies and regional stability, as oil markets react to the risk of further escalation in the Gulf.
