For Oluwatodimu Akinrinlola Micah, known on stage as Micah, music is not a career but a lifelong calling.
Raised in the vibrant soundscape of Lagos, Micah grew up immersed in the rhythms of church choirs and live instruments that shaped his community. To him, music was a language that transcended words, serving as a spiritual outlet and the foundation of his artistry.
Micah’s musical journey began in the church, where he played drums as a child before discovering the saxophone in his teenage years. Captivated by its soulful expressiveness, he describes it as “an extension of my voice, capable of connecting with people without words.” This discovery fueled his exploration of genres like gospel, afrobeats, jazz, and soul, ultimately shaping his distinctive Afro-fusion sound.
Since 2020, Micah has refined his craft through dynamic live performances and collaborations with notable Nigerian artists such as Saturn and Shola Babs. He gained recognition by creating saxophone covers of popular tracks, including Fireboy’s Vibration and Simi’s Duduke, infusing them with his unique style. These efforts culminated in his debut original release, Fun Sax, a track that embodies his artistic vision of blending technical precision with boundless joy. Without relying on lyrics, Fun Sax weaves a story of freedom and celebration through its infectious melody and rhythm.
“Fun Sax is about making people feel light,” Micah explains. “I wanted a sound you could dance to, laugh to, and enjoy without words dictating the emotion. The saxophone brings natural energy and joy.”
Micah’s music pays tribute to Nigeria’s tradition of live bands while reimagining it for a modern audience. Fun Sax channels the instrumental vibrancy of Nigeria’s musical heritage, seamlessly blending it with contemporary Afro-fusion. This fusion of tradition and innovation defines Micah’s unique sound, positioning him as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s music scene. His performances at premier venues, including Kalakuta (Fela Shrine), Eko Convention Centre, and Landmark Centre, have solidified his reputation as a leading instrumentalist.
At Kalakuta, a cultural landmark tied to Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat legacy, Micah’s saxophone captivated audiences with emotional depth and technical brilliance. His shows at Eko Convention Centre and Landmark Centre, hubs for high-profile events, transformed venues into spaces of joy, with audiences clapping and singing along to his wordless melodies. His performances during worship services at Living Waters in Ikoyi further showcase his versatility, elevating spiritual experiences with soulful playing.
Fun Sax has resonated with listeners craving fresh sounds, boosting Micah’s reputation as a saxophonist redefining the role of the instrument in Nigerian music, with award winning record producer Brown On Da Track. Fans and critics view him as more than a musician; he elevates the saxophone from a supporting role to a lead voice of innovation. This growing recognition underscores his potentiel to influence global audiences, as his Afro-fusion sound carries universal appeal.
For Micah, his music is a declaration of identity. “It’s not about following trends,” he says. “It’s about contributing a new sound, one that announces my presence and vision.” With Fun Sax, Micah has made a bold statement, bridging his gospel roots with a modern reinterpretation of Nigerian pop to create a distinct artistic vision. As Nigerian music continues to captivate global audiences, Micah is carving a unique lane, one where the saxophone leads with joy, soul, and creativity, poised to resonate on international stages.
