Lionel Messi took his career tally to 930 goals on Sunday night after scoring a superb free-kick, but Inter Miami were held to a 2-2 draw by San Diego FC in Major League Soccer.
San Diego took an early lead in the 12th minute when Anders Dreyer chipped Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair after receiving a through ball from Jeppe Tverskov.
Messi restored parity 12 minutes later after he was fouled just outside the penalty area. The Argentine curled his left-footed free-kick over the wall, with the ball hitting the post before crossing the line beyond goalkeeper CJ dos Santos.
The strike was Messi’s 20th goal in the 2026 MLS season and the 75th free-kick goal of his career. It also took his tally for Inter Miami to 101 goals, just four days after he scored his 100th goal for the club in their Campeones Cup victory over Cruz Azul.
Inter Miami completed the turnaround in the 74th minute when Luis Suárez put the hosts ahead, but San Diego refused to settle for defeat.
Dreyer scored his second goal of the night in the 82nd minute to restore parity and earn San Diego a point, extending Inter Miami’s run of consecutive MLS draws to four.
The result left Inter Miami with 46 points from 26 matches, having recorded 12 wins, four defeats and 10 draws.
For Messi, the latest milestone adds to an extraordinary scoring record at the age of 39, while his 101 goals for Inter Miami underline his continued influence since joining the Major League Soccer club.
