Executive Chairman of the Katsina State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Muhawwiya Aliyu, has put the current death toll at 41 from the earlier 32 following the recent outbreak of CelebroSpinal – Meningitis (CSM) in the area.
Aliyu spoke, on Thursday, at the commencement of an immunization exercise being carried out simultaneously across 12 of the affected local government areas of the state.
He also confirmed the receipt of the first batch of 50,000 doses of the CSM vaccines from the Federal Government which he said facilitated the immunization exercise.
Aliyu noted that the five local government areas of Jibia, Batsari, Funtua, Batagarawa and Faskari were worst hit by the virus.
He listed the other affected local government areas to include Katsina, Safana, Mani, Malumfashi, Baure, Kusada, Daura and Kankara.
According to him, “we have trained the personnel to conduct the vaccination in the affected areas and mobilization of the members of the public has also commenced.
“We are working hand in hand with the religious and traditional leaders as well as the local government health departments in the 12 affected areas across the state to ensure the exercise is successful and smooth.
“We are targeting children between two years and 14 years of age because they are the most affected.”
