The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has underscored the critical role of the media in supporting Nigeria’s security efforts, particularly in addressing the evolving challenges of asymmetric warfare.
The minister made the remarks while receiving the executive members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Defence in Abuja.
General Musa said effective collaboration between the military and the media was essential to ensuring that Nigerians receive timely, accurate and credible information on defence and security matters.
“The military really needs the media at this period of asymmetric warfare. My office will continue to maintain an open-door policy to foster a cordial relationship with the media and ensure the dissemination of accurate information to the public,” he said.
He assured the delegation that the ministry would carefully consider DECAN’s proposals and implement those considered feasible.
The minister also urged defence correspondents to remain fair, balanced and professional in their reportage, stressing that responsible journalism is vital to national security and public confidence.

Earlier, DECAN President, Odita Sunday, congratulated General Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, describing it as a recognition of his professionalism, competence and distinguished service.
He announced that the association would confer on the minister the title of Grand Patron of DECAN during its Conference and Award ceremony scheduled for October 2026, where it will also launch its publication titled “Defence Correspondents.”
According to Odita, the appointment reflects General Musa’s years of dedicated service and commitment to national security.
He reaffirmed DECAN’s commitment to responsible, balanced and factual reporting of defence and security issues while commending the Armed Forces of Nigeria for the sacrifices of its personnel in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.
Odita also appealed for stronger collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and defence correspondents through regular media engagements and timely dissemination of information, noting that closer cooperation would enhance public confidence in the Armed Forces and promote access to credible and accurate information on the ministry’s activities.
