The Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers (NSME) has honoured the Director-General of the Mining Cadastre Office (MCO), Simon Obadiah Nkom, with its Silver Jubilee Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the development of mining engineering in Nigeria.
The award was presented to Nkom in Abuja by the President of NSME, Dr Umar Hassan, who described the MCO boss as a professional whose leadership and contributions had positively impacted the mining and mineral processing engineering sector.
Hassan said the recognition was in appreciation of Nkom’s exemplary leadership, outstanding contributions to the society and continued support for professional organisations.
According to a statement by the Head of Information and Public Relations of the MCO, Henry David, the award was approved by the council of the NSME in recognition of Nkom’s commitment to advancing the mining industry.
Responding, Nkom described the honour as a special recognition, stressing that it was not just for him but also for the management and staff of the MCO.
He said: “I see this award as a recognition of the collective efforts of the management and staff of the Mining Cadastre Office. Leadership is a collective responsibility, and whatever achievements we have recorded are products of the support and cooperation of my colleagues.”
The MCO boss said the recognition would further motivate him and his team to contribute more to society and the growth of the mining sector.
He also expressed appreciation to the NSME for the honour and prayed for the continued growth and success of the professional body.
The award was earlier announced at the NSME Annual General Meeting and Conference held in Lokoja, Kogi State, in October 2026.
