France captain Kylian Mbappe has etched his name deeper into football history after becoming the first player to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot at two consecutive tournaments, finishing as the top scorer at the 2026 World Cup with 10 goals.
The 27-year-old forward secured the tournament’s highest individual scoring honour after leading the goalscoring chart despite France’s fourth-place finish. His latest achievement comes four years after he claimed the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with eight goals, making him the first footballer to successfully defend the prestigious award.
Mbappe’s remarkable campaign also placed him among the greatest goalscorers in World Cup history. His 10-goal haul is the highest by any player at a single tournament since West Germany legend Gerd Müller scored 10 goals at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.
Only two players have scored more goals in a single World Cup. France’s Just Fontaine remains the record holder with 13 goals at the 1958 tournament, while Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis netted 11 goals during the 1954 World Cup.
The French superstar further strengthened his place in football history by extending his record as the highest goalscorer in men’s FIFA World Cup history. His career tally now stands at 22 World Cup goals, moving him one clear of Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
Mbappe pulled ahead of Messi in the all-time scoring chart after scoring twice in France’s third-place play-off against England. Although Les Bleus were beaten 6-4 in a thrilling encounter, his brace proved decisive in securing both the Golden Boot and the all-time World Cup scoring record.
His outstanding tournament included two goals against Senegal and another brace against Iraq during the group stage. He also found the net against Sweden in the Round of 32, converted the winning penalty against Paraguay in the Round of 16, scored against Morocco in the quarter-finals and added two more goals in the third-place play-off.
Messi remained Mbappe’s closest challenger for the Golden Boot after scoring eight goals during Argentina’s run to the final. The Argentine captain required a hat-trick in Sunday’s World Cup final to overtake the Frenchman but failed to score as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to lift the trophy.
England midfielder Jude Bellingham and Norway striker Erling Haaland finished joint-third in the Golden Boot standings with seven goals apiece, while France winger Ousmane Dembele and England captain Harry Kane concluded the tournament with six goals each.
Mbappe’s latest milestone further cements his legacy as one of the greatest World Cup performers of all time. At just 27, the France captain has rewritten several tournament records and added another historic achievement to an already extraordinary international career by becoming the first player to win back-to-back FIFA World Cup Golden Boot awards.
